News Update: Wednesday, June 27 - New Hampshire Attorney Selected As Next County Manager

A New Hampshire attorney and former county commissioner from the Granite State has been selected as the next Dukes county manager.

At a special meeting Wednesday the Dukes County Commission voted 5-2 to offer the position to Katherine Rogers. Ms. Rogers, a former county attorney serving Merrimack County, N.H., will relocate to the Island from Concord, N.H., to accept the full-time position.

Holmes Hole Sailing

The Holmes Hole Sailing Association commenced its Thursday Evening series of handicap sailboat racing from Vineyard Haven Harbor on June 21 with a 6:00 p.m.

With a moderate west southwest wind of 8-10 knots, 13 boats posted for the start at red nun 6 outside of the Vineyard Haven breakwater. The fleet sailed a broad reach on the port tack to west chop, jibed onto starboard for a reach to East Chop, and sailed close hauled with one or two tacks to the finish line.

Cherene Sherrard-Johnson’s biography of Oak Bluffs writer Dorothy West might never have been launched but for a startling revelation that upended the researcher’s corner of the literary world.

Ms. Sherrard-Johnson, an English professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, described to an Island audience Thursday how Dorothy West’s Paradise: A Biography of Class and Color emerged from the ashes of her work on a 19th century female writer who was considered part of the black literary canon.

For seasonal West Tisbury resident Sue Mullin, creating art has been a collaborative project. After a long hiatus, she took up painting once again at workshops with Bill Ternes on the Vineyard through artist Hermine Hull. Artist and friend Leslie Baker helped Ms. Mullin forge a new wave of artistic vision, sharing special painting spots and offering encouragement. Now, Ms. Mullin’s work will be available for the public to enjoy, free of charge, for the month of July at the West Tisbury Library.

Save the date for the Legacy of Learning benefit when community members gather to support the Edgartown Public Library at its fourth annual summer fundraiser.

The event, held at Herring Creek Farm in Katama, takes place on July 8 at noon, and will feature two award ceremonies. The foundation honors Norman Bridwell and Norris Darrell with its Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing their contributions to library education. The winner of a poster contest winner will also be presented with an award.

Bravo Church Choir

Fresh off a tour of Northern Italy, the Federated Church touring choir serenades Vineyard audiences at an Italian-inspired service featuring sacred music, both classical and contemporary. The special program takes place at the Federated Church in Edgartown on July 8, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Batter Up for Movie Under the Stars

The excitement from baseball doesn’t just come from fast pitches and big hits. At 8:30 p.m. tomorrow, June 27, the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society along with the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks and Martha’s Vineyard Little League Baseball screens Knuckleball! outdoors at the Vineyard Baseball Park at the regional high school.
