Our New Look

Beginning this week the Gazette has finetuned its design, including changes in fonts, typography and makeup. The design changes were led by Stephen Durkee, the Gazette’s director of graphics and design, who worked with Sam Berlow of Font Bureau to identify a typeface that evoked the rich typographic history of the 166-year-old Gazette, yet was flexible and easy to read.

The tournament is over, the trophy has been held high and now holds its place of honor in the front lobby of the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, one among a small number of other state tournament trophies won by the regional high school through the decades. The 2012 division three state tournament title goes to boys’ tennis, a first in the history of the school.

What a long strange trip it’s been! Sorry to have missed you last week but I was overwhelmed, in a good way.

West Tisbury Town Column: June 22

The Father’s Day weather was superb and dad got to relax, at least for one day. Many outdoor cookouts were held in his honor and I was the recipient of a new grill and for once he did not have to clean up afterward. Summer began on Wednesday; the buses will be operating their full summer schedule beginning tomorrow morning. It is also the official opening day for Lambert’s Cove beach when stickers will be required. We will experience a dramatic increase the population and automobile traffic this weekend. The public schools were dismissed for the summer on Tuesday.

Oak Bluffs Town Column: June 22

On Jan. 23, 1790, Wampanoag Robert Seaton put his X on the deed, selling what became the Cottage City district of Oak Bluffs to Samuel Norton for 10 pounds. On June 22, 1870, 142 years ago today, his descendant, Captain Shubael Lyman Norton, sold the land for $1,613.40 — about as much as a modest week here costs.

Land Bank Revenues: June 15

The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank reported revenues of $188,856 for the business week ending on Friday, June 15, 2012. The land bank receives its funds from a two per cent fee charged on many Vineyard real estate transactions.

Much of the land bank revenue last week came from the town of West Tisbury, where three transactions resulted in $92,250. In Oak Bluffs, four eligible transactions yielded $46,616. Four transactions in Tisbury generated $42,660, while 11 in Edgartown resulted in $7,330. No eligible transactions were recorded in Chilmark or Aquinnah.

Got ticks? Tell it to Dick Johnson. He’ll come right to your yard and commiserate with you about how bad it is. Then he will actually quantify your misery for you (count the ticks) and even tell you what you can do to keep your yard out of the Guinness Book of World Records as the yard with the most ticks ever. But even if you don’t see any ticks or signs of ticks, I’ll bet you that he can find at least a few around the edges of your lawn or paths.

Chilmark Town Column: June 22

Chilmark finally felt the heat! The temperature went up dramatically on Wednesday this week. I didn’t hear too many complaining. The beaches were busy and so were the parking lots and the food places. All good signs of a summer well underway.
