School’s out! So Bridget Slomka, granddaughter of Marge and Paul Howes of Vineyard Haven, wasted no time getting on a plane from Phoenix and heading to Logan, where Paul met her and brought her down to the Island last night. Bridget had spent one year here in the Tisbury School before moving to Kentucky, now to Arizona, so she is looking forward to connecting with her old young friends.

We have been having some incredible weather. Sunny, cool at night and beautiful blue skies. As I write this it is pouring rain — but then we know we don’t have to water the gardens tomorrow!

Heytor Arrives

Rikielly Peres and Osualdo Dias of Vineyard Haven announce the birth of Heytor Peres Dias, born on June 18, 2011, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Heytor weighed 7 pounds, 13 ounces at birth.

Pamela and Jonathan Belain of West Tisbury announce the birth of a son, Jonathan Morgan Belain Jr., born on June 16, 2011, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Jonathan weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces.

Kerry and Sean Cummings of Vineyard Harven announce the birth of a daughter, Sophia Grace Cummings, born on May 25, 2011, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Sophia weighed 6 pounds, 14 ounces at birth.

Aidan Arrives

Noelani and John Chase welcomed the birth of their first son, Aidan Keoni Chase, on June 16, 2011 at 4:52 a.m. Aidan weighed 7 pounds, 13 ounces at birth. Noelani is the daughter of Jonathan and Hannah Scott of West Tisbury. John is the son of Diane and the late Joseph Chase of Worcester.

At first you can’t tell what the paintings are. Then you notice the gruesome red spot on one, the shape of a head on the second, the bodily form lying there on the third; three paintings playing with your perception of a man who has been shot in the head.

The artist is Walker Roman, 21, who is one of four featured artists at Shephard Fine ArtSpace’s show that opened last Saturday.

Strawberry Festival Season Upon Us

Strawberry season is upon us. Sure, just biting into a strawberry this time of year is guaranteed to make you gasp with pleasure and marvel that Mother Nature could be so generous.

But we are people, darn it, and although so often we tend to desecrate Mother Nature, sometimes we get it right and bump big momma up a notch. That’s what the good people at the West Tisbury Congregational Church have been doing for the past 23 years at their annual Strawberry Festival.
