In graduate school I read Plato and learned that old men can’t learn new things. It wasn’t scary then. It’s a little different now. Because conventional wisdom seems to agree with Plato that cognitive decline occurs as we age, I decided last winter to learn something about the brain. As more sophisticated imaging techniques have developed, neuroscientists have made great strides unlocking the secrets of brain functioning.

Tonight’s gibbous moon appears low in the zodiac, in the constellation Sagittarius. The moon spends the night in the South. For those who visit South Beach at night, the moon marks a sparkling trail from the viewer to just under the moon. The size of the sparkles will be guided by how turbulent the sea is under the moon.

Warm days and cool nights — we seem to be having the best of both worlds. Now if this weather keeps up for the rest of the week, everyone will be happy and the fireworks will go off tonight as scheduled.
Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Joseph Davies, who celebrated his day August 16; to Brandon Steigelman for August 18; and to Taylor Fauteux and Nicholas Vukota, who celebrate their day today, August 20.

Chappy doesn’t ask a lot from us. Just stay out of her poison ivy and ticks, and we’re good. But she gives a lot in return. More than one soul has been healed on a cool summer night, the stars, the owls, the salt breeze working in concert to soothe the senses.
