Hard Work, Great Stuff, Good Deals

Hard Work, Great Stuff, Good Deals

The Vineyard Artisans Festival opens for the season, Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Grange Hall in “downtown” West Tisbury will fill to bursting with handmade clothing, jewelry, botanicals, decor and more, as artists and craftsmen of all breeds put their wares up for sale after a long winter of working and waiting for this very moment. And remember, most everything available is one-of-a-kind, so don’t dawdle, lest you lose out to earlier birds than yourself.

Summer Runners Pounding Pavement for Benefit Race

Considered by many to be the starting shot of the Vineyard summer season, the annual Oak Bluffs Memorial Day Road Race is this Sunday morning, May 30. Consisting of a 5 kilometer road race and walk, along with a one mile family fun run, the race has seen over 600 racers and countless spectators of all ages over the years, with all proceeds going to benefit Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard, which relies on these funds to provide nursing, social, spiritual and bereavement services to the Island community.

Eating Is Everywhere Again

Eating Is Everywhere Again

The tip jars have fresh pleas (“college tuition,” “ticket to Europe”) in the takeouts. The white aprons are pressed in the posh establishments. We can eat up-Island, we can eat by the sea, and for the moment we can still eat BYOB in Tisbury (by summer’s end, beer may be on tap).

Chefs we welcome with open mouths are teasing us with new menus. Restaurant owners are teasing us with special deals.

Nuns Share Rocky, Riotous Road to Recovery

Heard the one about the brawling Bronx nun who drank too much Christian Brothers?

Those who do know Sister Maurice Doody and Sister Rose Patricia Reilly’s deadpan sobriety standup act well tend to complain when they drop any details: “You left out the part where you beat up your sister!”

Klezmer Duo With Clout Create Workshop, Concert

The success of the recent music jams hosted by the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center have provided proof positive that the Island loves klezmer music. So it makes sense that this weekend, the center will ramp up the game with instruction, dancing and performance, with the guidance and expertise of the Strauss/Warschauer Duo, a pair of musicians and teachers of international renown, specializing in klezmer and Yiddish music and dance.

Creative Campers to Take Stage with Yard Artists

Kids’ Creative Theater classes at The Yard in Chilmark, featuring fun and skills with veteran teaching artists as well as the opportunity to participate alongside professional actors, dancers and singers in The Yard’s Saturday family matinee, begin July 5.

There are six different week-long sessions for children entering first through eighth grades, and a trainee program for high schoolers. Sessions meet 9 a.m. to noon, Monday to Friday and 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturdays for the matinee. There is an open class for family and friends on Friday mornings.
