Wisteria Hysteria

Not having a television, I was unaware (until someone mentioned it) that there’s a Wisteria Lane that holds a special place in the prime-time lineup.

Wisteria may or may not have a special place in your heart, but it will have a big place in your yard if you don’t keep an eye (and a pruner) out. Notorious for its rapid growth and strangling potential, wisteria is a plant to be reckoned with.

Steve Rob

Season Opener

The recreational season is off and running and no one can appreciate it better now than Capt. Scott McDowell of Chilmark. His boat is in the water working perfectly after a mishap earlier this year.

Kara Taylor, Painting at a Thousand Feet

Pilot John Levinson said the first time he took painter Kara Taylor up in his single-engine Mooney Acclaim she didn’t say a word. “She was transfixed,” he says of her response to viewing the Island’s contours at 1,200 feet.

Galleries Get Season Going: Fresh Artists, Shows, Venues

The Vineyard has long been a haven for artists. Heading into Memorial Day weekend, art gallery doors will be thrown open for the season, with paintings, sculpture, ceramics and other objects ready to meet their public. Most of the season’s formal shows await June or July start dates, but a handful of galleries have lined up events for this coming holiday weekend.

Dancer

Dance: Wild, Wonderful and World Class

“My dad has a barn,” chirped a wide-eyed, hyperactive Mickey Rooney. “And my mom can sew the costumes,” the pigtailed, pinafore-bedecked Judy Garland replied. And off they went, hand in hand, singing and dancing their way across the barnyard.

Well, it was something like that and they didn’t even live on the Vineyard where the performing arts culture has grown and grown. No more drafty barns here and mom can now sit in the audience and not have to sew costumes.
