This is the week of the Imaginary Tick. It isn’t as if we don’t have actual ticks. We have ticks trekking up our shirts, hiding in our sleeves, lurking in our blankets and, of course, embedding in the pelts of our dogs. This happens even when we’ve Frontlined the pooches, because it takes a while for those intrepid little bugs to discover they’ve hopped a ride on a moving Love Canal.

Well, happy spring. We have had a great week and the weather has been typically warm during the day and cool at night. We are still telling people at the nursery to be careful with the plants as some people had frost last week. It has been said the frost warnings stop on May 15; however, according to The Old Farmers Almanac, you should wait until the last full moon of the month to plant which is May 27.

Are you missing a cat from the Turkeyland Cove area of Edgartown? The Edgartown animal control officer brought a lovely tuxedo (black and white ) intact male cat to the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard that was picked up as a stray in that area near the Fay estate. He will be neutered next week and given his shots and then be ready for adoption if no one claims him.

Chilmark is a busy place. The town hall is buzzing with meetings at all hours, and when folks aren’t planning our future they are working on their own. The future of Silva Farm is under discussion and the fishermen are hopefully turning out for the Commercial Fishermen’s dinner at the Home Port on May 26 and for the documentary movie to be shown at the library on June 9. Many gardens are getting planted and lobster pots are being set. Food seems to be the priority in all these happenings . . . and how can that be bad?
