Well, happy spring. We have had a great week and the weather has been typically warm during the day and cool at night. We are still telling people at the nursery to be careful with the plants as some people had frost last week. It has been said the frost warnings stop on May 15; however, according to The Old Farmers Almanac, you should wait until the last full moon of the month to plant which is May 27.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Sheron DeMedeiros, who celebrated her day May 16; Rhanna DeOliveira and Shannon Levesque on May 16; Elliott Ferland on May 17; Ian Shea on May 19; James Cleary, Amelia Craig, Lukas Fenske and Erin Hagarty on May 20; and to Hanna Kim and Heather Kiwin, who celebrate their day today, May 21.

I am not sure of the date but happy anniversary to Mike and Patty Gazaille this past week. Mike surprised Patty with a very nice trip. She was told to pack a bag (he told her what temperature to expect) and they left the Island. She did not know until the airport where she was going. The next day she posted on Facebook to all her friends “Rice a Roni” so of course we all knew they were in San Francisco. Patty said they had a great time and they saw all the best places. It was truly a great trip and one they won’t soon forget.

I was surprised and happy to see Mary Waller Gazaille back home after living a long time in Virginia. She said she is happy to be back and she is enjoying riding her horse Remy and taking trail rides with her granddaughter, Martha.

On Tuesday, May 25 thirty per cent of all food sales at participating Edgartown businesses will go to support the Friends of the Edgartown Council of Aging’s Neighbor Helping Neighbor Fund, which helps Edgartown Seniors with fuel cost. Sounds like a good time and we know the food is always good.

The Edgartown Library Foundation has launched its annual A Legacy of Learning Essay Contest and encourages all Edgartown students in grades one through eight to participate. This year’s topic is The Edgartown Public Library and Me: What’s My Story?

The deadline for entry is June 11; essays may be submitted to the Edgartown Library or mailed to the Edgartown Library Foundation, P.O. Box 1198, Edgartown, MA 02539. Congratulations to Kenny Ivory, who was given an award for 35 years of service at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Kenny started working at the hospital after he got out of the Coast Guard. He has always taken his job seriously and with pride and he always has a smile or a greeting when you pass him in the halls of the hospital. Kenny is married to Kathy and has two daughters, Kelsey and Kristina. Congratulations Kenny and thank you for all your years of hard work.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
