Happy summer! Happy Fourth of July! How wonderful it is to be back on the Island after a long, snowy winter in Pennsylvania. It occurs to me each spring, when I return, that this is a revered destination. A place where if only for a few days or weeks we can get in touch with a universal need to change rhythm to a more Zen-like existence; to shed the stresses of the year and pause to examine in depth that which we have been too busy to appreciate during the year.

Sundog Owner Frank Foltz Turns Hotelier in Canada

By MARK ALAN LOVEWELL

Frank Foltz, the owner of Sundog, a men’s clothing store in Edgartown, hasn’t been around much. Instead of greeting his customers at the store, the active 77-year-old entrepreneur has been spending his time up in Jones Falls, Ontario, running a recently acquired 133-year-old historic hotel.

The Hotel Kenney, which comprises a number of buildings and even a small concert hall and docks, is being revitalized as one of the community’s top attractions.

Vineyard Power Cooperative Members Debate Management

As the nearly 800 members of Vineyard Power — the Island’s nascent energy cooperative — vote on their future, at least 12.5 per cent of them need to actually show up in person to legally do so as a quorum. Members who attended Wednesday night’s meeting to vote on rather mundane bylaw changes were disappointed to find that there were not enough in attendance to do so.

One audience member blamed the poor attendance on the lack of urgency in the cooperative’s electronic bulletin.
