On Sunday morning, July 4, flags will go up at the Oak Grove Cemetery beginning at 7:30 a.m. Volunteers are needed to help with this patriotic task. The flags come down again at 3 p.m., and if you are not an early riser and want to help then, please come!

What lovely weather we’ve been having! Such a treat for those who chose this past week as vacation, I do hope it continues for our other expected guests. Lenny’s Loop is certainly filling fast; Bill and Jan Stokes are in residence and Bill has already found some bridge games. Bill and Deb Little, parents of newly graduated Curry College student, Jessica Walsh, had a delightful party for Jess last Sunday. Many of her friends from off-Island attended, as well as Island friends and neighbors. Jess majored in nursing and is currently working at our hospital. She is preparing for the RN exam later this month.

Runners, skateboarders, cyclists, walkers, and inline skaters have taken over the loop around West Chop. Their passage is so frequent that my dogs have finally stopped barking at each as they pass by. And I must say I have never seen anyone’s flowers look so stupendous, especially the hydrangeas this year. Looks like there could be lots of entries in the flower arrangement category at the Ag Fair.

Speaking of fairs, our street fair is Thursday, July 8, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Main street, a.k.a. Cora Medeiros’ birthday party. Our library will close earlier that night, at 6 p.m., to help the town prepare. Usually, our library is open until 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Of course, the library will be closed on Monday, July 5, as part of the Fourth of July weekend.

In other library news, Now and Zen is a free presentation on Tuesday, July 6 at 7 p.m. in the program room. Famed storyteller Susan Klein, accompanied by the photography of Alan Brigish, will charm you with stories of growing up on the Island and how we got from there to here. All are welcome.

On Wednesday, July 7 at 3 p.m. ages six and up are treated to a free movie and popcorn in the program room. Have the kids return on Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for EarthCrafts with Kathy Forrester.

If you travel all the way over to the Oak Bluffs library on Friday, July 9 at 11 a.m. you can catch peripatetic Tom Dresser signing copies of his newest book, now out at Bunch of Grapes and Edgartown Books. African Americans on Martha’s Vineyard from Enslavement to the Presidential Visit is published by History Press. I’ll see you there.

I am a bit confused but delighted. The Mansion House, in their ever-generous community offerings, has free classes in July on Sundays. I received a particular note for Sunday, July 11, at 5:30 p.m. I believe that one is Pilates led by Toni Cohen, I’m just not sure if there is one this Sunday afternoon, perhaps not, because it’s the Fourth. Check out the schedule at mvmansionhouse.com. All ages are welcome, especially seniors, to keep fit and in shape.

The arts are taking off as they do here every high season. Louisa Gould Gallery, 54 Main street, has a reception tomorrow night from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with live music and refreshments. New works by Chris Pendergast, Jeff P’an, Maya Farber, Robert Jewett and Jules Worthington are on view. Meanwhile, the Simon Gallery, also at 54 Main street, hosts a party on their third anniversary, Monday, July 5. Peter is showing photos from a cross-country drive he and Ronni took last winter, Off the Rock and On the Road, as well as images from a tropical cruise. Speak to Peter about his lessons and workshops, and admire Ronni’s fabulous jewelry.

The Yard has active camps and programs for dance artists of all ages. A special treat will be free matinees all summer on Saturdays at 4 p.m. Excerpts performed will be from YardArts, guest starring the Kids Creative Theatre Ensemble.

Doug and Lesley Hewson receive anniversary wishes on July 3. Anniversary bouquets go out to Arthur and Charlotte Strople on the Fourth of July, who celebrate along with their daughter, Tootie Kieffer and husband Tim.

The birthday bandwagon pulls along John Clark Wallace, Jean Dowling, Penelope Bonelli, and John Scott today; tomorrow is for Chris Geddis, Larry Gomez, and Hans Buder; July 4 is a party for Cora Medeiros, Steve McCar-thy, Derek Araujo, and Steve Nichols; July 5 honors Cathy Burdick, Mike McCluskey, and Pat Murphy; July 6 is claimed by Selma Balboni, Carol Fleming, and Kerry Sertl; July 7 belongs to Kyle Natichioni, Peggy Jewett, and Julie Fisher; and on July 8 Jordan Stallings takes the cake. Many happy returns.
