Painful Cuts for Groundfishermen Take Effect

As the struggle to save the foundering Northeast groundfishery continues, drastic cuts on landing limits for cod, yellowtail flounder and haddock went into effect this week. Adopted by the New England Fishery Management Council in late January and effective May 1, the cuts brought little cheerful news to the fishing communities up and down the New England coast.

Flaws in Construction Likely Cause of Windemere Roof Collapse

Flaws in the original construction were the cause of a mishap at Windemere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center when a section of porch roof collapsed Wednesday morning while workmen were repairing windows, the hospital said.

No one was injured in the accident.

Congressman Keating to Visit Vineyard Thursday

Cong. Bill Keating will make a daylong trip to the Vineyard Thursday to tour storm-ravaged coastal areas in Oak Bluffs and Aquinnah.

Mr. Keating will begin the day by hosting one of his constituent coffee sessions, where people are encouraged to meet him and ask questions.

Left Teetering on Edge, Stonewall Beach Home Is Demolished

A small cottage perilously close to the edge at Stonewall Beach in Chilmark has been demolished to prevent it from falling over the cliff, town building inspector Leonard Jason Jr. said Tuesday.

The demolition of the structure, which contains a bedroom, began Monday, Mr. Jason said. By Tuesday afternoon the demolition on Greenhouse Lane was complete. The debris was trucked off to the Edgartown landfill.

Selectmen, Nonprofit Clash Over Edgartown Library Donations

Edgartown selectmen and members of the Edgartown Library Foundation sparred Monday over whether the nonprofit organization would turn over money for the town’s new library project, with selectmen criticizing the organization for a lack of transparency and withholding the money, while foundation members said they had concerns about the project’s completion and wanted naming opportunities for the new library.

Turnout Light for Town, State Primary Election

Early morning voter turnout for the special state primary and town elections Tuesday was low, but, in at least one town, steady. Oak Bluffs town clerk Deborah Ratcliff said that, as of 10 a.m., she had seen more voters than expected at the public library.

“We’ve had somebody here every moment,” she said. Shortly after, the lone pair of voters in the ballot area left as two more walked into the polls. Still, Ms. Ratcliff said only about 40 voters had shown up to mark their ballots.

State Primary, Two Town Elections Today

Polls are open in every Vineyard town today for a special state primary in the U.S. Senate race to fill the seat formerly held by Sen. John Kerry. There are three candidates seeking the nomination on the GOP side and two on the Democratic ticket. Low turnout is expected statewide in a race that has seen little spark.

Tisbury and Chilmark will also hold their annual town elections today.

Polls are open in every town from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Mr. Kerry stepped down in January to become secretary of state after serving as senator for 28 years.

Lieut. Gov. Timothy Murray’s trip to the Vineyard Monday took him from surveying a damaged seawall in Oak Bluffs to watching culinary students cook chicken Marsala at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School.

Dorothy Bangs Leaves Legacy of Volunteerism, Daffodil Days

Dorothy Bangs, a longtime Vineyard Haven resident who was well known for her tireless volunteer work on the Island, died on April 25. She was 88.

Among other things, Mrs. Bangs was a familiar fixture on the Island during Daffodil Days, the annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

Man Charged with Making False Bomb Threat at Steamship Authority

A Connecticut man headed to the Vineyard was arrested Sunday night at the Steamship Authority terminal in Woods Hole after allegedly claiming to have a bomb in his vehicle.

Krzysztof Malz, 45, of New Britain, Conn., will be charged with a threat concerning the location of dangerous items (explosives), according to a statement from Falmouth police Capt. Douglas DeCosta.
