Travel Club Spring

Although the March wind still blows cold, spring is beginning to make itself known on the Island. And for those who want to truly embrace spring, on April 29 the Tisbury Travel Club is heading to the Museum of Fine Art in Boston for their salute to spring, also known as the Art in Bloom show.

No Friend to Flowers, How to Deter Deer

The arrival of spring means longer days, budding blooms, birdsong and, unfortunately, the unwelcome arrival of deer in the backyard. Deer dig up gardens, eat tulips, and trample plants. They scrape bark off young trees and decimate backyard greenery, all in their quest to find food. Bambi is a beautiful creature, but he can be very detrimental to a garden.

Please Adopt Us

The Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard is happy to report that they have only one animal available for adoption. Hazel is a beautiful, elegant and gentle Calico cat who is being vet-checked this week and will be ready to go to a new home by next Friday. She was given up for adoption because of severe allergies in the family. If you are interested in adopting Hazel, visit her at the shelter.

IMP Troupe is Bound for Windy City

During last Thursday’s IMP rehearsal, there was some hesitation about Hansel. The game was called “Happily Ever After . . . Or Not,” and the improv group of teenage actors were waiting for the narrator, in this case Ashley Girard, to begin the story.

Easter Services Around the Island

The following is a list of many of the Good Friday and Easter services held around the Island this weekend. Houses of worship will also host sunrise services at a backyard, a Sherriff’s Meadow property and Inkwell Beach. Easter egg hunts abound, pancake breakfasts, too, and the West Tisbury Congregational Church will once again celebrate its Easter service at the Agricultural Hall at 10 a.m. with an Easter egg hunt afterwards. All are welcome.

Announcing Henry

Valeryia and Michael Jackson of Edgartown announce the birth of a son, Henry Igor Jackson, born on March 22, 2013 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Henry weighed 7 pounds, 13.6 ounces at birth.

Deer and Birds

At first glance, it seems unlikely that there is a connection between the abundance of white-tailed deer and the long-term documented decline of many songbirds. But let’s take a closer look.

Amazingly enough, deer used to be scarce, with low populations nationwide prior to 1900. Their populations rebounded once restrictions on hunting were put in place and now they are incredibly abundant, making this perhaps one of the most successful wildlife conservation efforts ever.

Hello, Shiloh

Karen and Derek Logan of Edgartown announce the birth of a daughter, Shiloh Louise Logan, born on March 18, 2013 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Shiloh weighed 7 pounds, 5 ounces at birth.

Star Basketball Alum

Kia Minor of Edgartown, a former basketball player at the Oak Bluffs School and the regional high school, was named a member of the 2012-2013 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball All-Conference First Team last week. Kia, a senior at Framingham State University, is captain of the women’s basketball team. She has been chosen twice this year as the MASCAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, and is the eighth Framingham State women’s basketball player to pass 1,000 career points.
