The Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard is happy to report that they have only one animal available for adoption. Hazel is a beautiful, elegant and gentle Calico cat who is being vet-checked this week and will be ready to go to a new home by next Friday. She was given up for adoption because of severe allergies in the family. If you are interested in adopting Hazel, visit her at the shelter.
In the summer of 2009, just a short time after the shelter opened for business, a sweet yellow lab was brought in for adoption. Her name was Susie. No one at the shelter believed that she would ever find a home because of a severe skin condition. Susie required extensive treatment, and almost daily baths, so the Susie Fund was established to pay for her medical bills. An Edgartown couple, Ray and Teddie Ellis, came to see her and adopted her. She continued to benefit from the generosity of donors to the fund, which continues to this day. Many animals have been helped by the Susie Fund. Susie died a week ago, but her legacy will live on. If you would like to make a donation in her memory please send your check to the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard (with a notation that it is for the Susie Fund).
Shelter hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The shelter is closed Sunday and Monday. The telephone number is 508-627-8662.
Contributions are always gratefully accepted; the shelter is funded solely by donations. Please make checks out to The Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard; the mailing address is P.O. Box 1829, Edgartown MA 02539.
