Could we possibly plan a more perfect weekend than last. I did some gardening sitting on a stool and simply enjoying the days.
What a weekend! A sandhill crane, western kingbird and Say’s phoebe are the three western species that were present this past weekend. It must be the fall migration for all these western strays to be here at the same time.
Colorful harvest festivals are one marker for the arrival of autumn, but for me the surest sign that fall is here is the number of days I spend mucking about in Island ponds.
Short plays, like short stories, have never caught on with the popular culture to the extent to which they so richly deserve. And yet they offer such a better return, really, for the public’s entertainment dollar. More stories, more sets of characters, more writers, directors and all of the other creative elements that go into live theatre for the same single ticket price.
Nineteen years ago, Eleanor Hubbard adopted a calico cat from the Edgartown animal shelter. Tonight, in New York city, that cat is about to get her closeup.
The cat’s name is Ulla, a Norwegian name. Her actual pedigree is unclear, perhaps French, based on her inclination towards the arts and painting. Over the years Ulla has become Ms. Hubbard’s muse and model in the studio.
One Way Ticket, Yeah
On Oct. 23 the Beatles are coming to the Vineyard. And you thought their debut at Shea Stadium was monumental.
For those worried, or excited, about ghostly visages, the folks playing the music will not be the Fab Four but rather local Island musicians who call themselves the Daytrippers. But close your eyes and it may truly be John, George, Paul and Ringo you hear.
Halloween Costume Trade
Okay, so it was in the 80‘s this weekend, but that doesn’t mean that Halloween isn’t still around the corner. And for those with extra costumes lying around, or those with no ideas or materials to help the little ones scare the hair off Aunt Dot, the Oak Bluffs Library is setting up a costume swap.
Drop off your unwanted costume at the Oak Bluffs Public Library anytime before 6 p.m. on Oct. 21. And for every costume donated you get a ticket to the big swap on Oct. 22 from 10:30 to 3 p.m.
Metabolic Boot Camp
Vineyarders, do not ask whether the metabolic boot camp wants you, rather ask whether your metabolism wants boot camp.
If that sounds a bit heavy on the system, what with all those boots stomping all over your cells, think again. This camp, hosted by Jan Buhrman and run by food expert John Bagnola, is designed to lighten the load on your system so you can take your body from feeling like an old Pinto wagon to a souped-up Bondmobile.
