Gazette Chronicle:

Leading Lights

From Gazette editions of October, 1961:

Ernest E. Duarte of Makonikey has taken the contract to repair the lighthouse tower at Tarpaulin Cove and to make a general clean-up of the government reservation there. The work will begin as soon as settled weather allows the necessary crossing of the Sound with equipment and material. A building mover among other accomplishments, he anticipates unusual activity in this department during the coming months.

Cable Talks

In a small room on the second floor of West Tisbury town hall this week, a crowd of maybe one actual spectator gathered to hear the latest on the state of play between the Davids of Martha’s Vineyard and the Goliath known as Comcast.

Upholding the Law on Land and Sea

A 128-year-old painting of a Vineyard sheriff has been rehung in the Edgartown courthouse after extensive restoration. The painting of Sheriff Frances Cottle Smith was accidentally slashed from behind while in storage when the courtroom was repainted four years ago.

And behind an oil painting with an accidental slash lies an intricate family story.

The restoration work was spearheaded by Ann A. Perkins — a Los Angeles resident who is the great-great-granddaughter of the subject in the portrait — and her husband, John.

Chilmark is so quiet! Some of us are enjoying the silence . . . along with the beautiful harvest moon and the cleansing high tides that go with that moon.

There is a lot that is newsworthy and most of it starts at town hall. On Oct. 18 at the selectmen’s meeting they will review the findings of the legal advisors as to what our options are in dealing with the Tea Lane Farm. The public is welcome to all selectmen’s meetings. The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. at town hall.

Calm seas and a tepid north wind gave rise to a highly enjoyable Holmes Hole postseason race on Sunday, Oct. 2. Taking on four other boats, season-long winner Andy Berry in Isobar, a Cal 33, continued his dominance by taking the contest, which consisted of two laps around the traditional HSSA triangle.
