Calm seas and a tepid north wind gave rise to a highly enjoyable Holmes Hole postseason race on Sunday, Oct. 2. Taking on four other boats, season-long winner Andy Berry in Isobar, a Cal 33, continued his dominance by taking the contest, which consisted of two laps around the traditional HSSA triangle.

Informal is the best way to describe the outing as there was no committee boat and the contestants had to keep their own time via GPS. Commodore Dan Culkin counted down the minutes to the start aboard his Vineyard Vixen Magic Time and blew the horn to signal the noon start.

The fleet beat to West Chop with Isobar quickly in the lead, followed by Silhouette, a Nonesuch skippered by Rebecca Colson and Roger Becker in Gloria, a C& C 24. Magic Time and David Lott’s Avanti, a Cape Dory 270, battled it out for the final two positions.

In the final leg the sun broke through the clouds on an exciting finish. Avanti passed Magic Time and it was a race to the finish line. Magic Time nipped Avanti by less than a boat length, but Avanti came out ahead on corrected time.
