Spring has officially arrived, actually the same time that summer has arrived, in Aquinnah. The temperature has been in the 60s and 70s, a few scattered showers on occasion to keep the water level even, and a few brisk winds. The blossoms of iris, wisteria, lilacs, rhododendrons and azaleas are all dotting the landscape. It has been a long weekend of many more families opening their summer homes for the season with many family gatherings.

The holiday weekend swept through Chilmark as it always does, with lots of chores still to do and the first wave of visitors here hoping for fun in the sun. The weather tried to please everyone but there was a lot of fog on occasion. Everyone seemed happy to be here and that is what makes it a holiday weekend. The parades and speeches helped to focus on the meaning of the weekend and that was good.

Chappaquiddick has now entered its yellow period. For the next week or two, every surface exposed to the outdoor air will be covered with pollen. My blue car, which is parked at home under some oaks, is now a yellow car. It finally got warm enough for us to open our back porch for use, which we did this past weekend. Last year I cleaned it a little early because we had a real spring, and then came the pollen. This year I’m not going to bother cleaning it until the yellow period ends.
