Fisheries Discussion
The Menemsha Fisheries Development Fund 2008 Lecture Series presents a discussion on the state of the Massachusetts fishing industry from a regulatory and policy perspective on Wednesday, May 21, at 5:30 p.m. at the Chilmark Public Library.
The lecture features special guests Paul Diodati, director of the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, and John Pappalardo, chairman of the New England Fisheries Development Council and member of the Massachusetts Marine Fishery Advisory Commission.

I am very pleased with the progress on the donation box for our troops overseas. But I’m not as pleased as I could be. Jill LaPiana’s Girl Scout Troop 802 decorated a box that is just in front of the counter at Cumby’s. It is two-thirds full. I want it full, and some of you who don’t have books to donate or time to shop for personal items could make a cash donation to Jill to cover the postage. The Scouts want to send it off next week so please hurry.
On June 21, Oak Bluffs will kick off summer with two well-known events, HarborFest and Summer Solstice, merged into one day of outdoor entertainment called the Day of Water, Night of Lights.
The day will begin at noon with the 17th annual HarborFest featuring music, arts, crafts and family entertainment nestled between the harborfront and the gingerbread cottages. Throughout the day, the harbor will host activities including the Anything that Floats Race and a demonstration by the U.S. Coast Guard.
Architects Win Awards
Hutker Architects of Vineyard Haven and Falmouth has won two merit awards in the 2008 Custom Home Design Awards program for a residence and a kitchen.
Time Out in Tisbury
Following a passionately fought campaign about whether Tisbury should allow restaurants to sell beer and wine, voters have spoken on the matter by the most slender of margins — two votes.
A recount of the historic tie vote decided the matter last week, and Tisbury will remain a dry town.
Backers of the alcohol sales initiative, having come so close, now want to bring the issue back before the voters as quickly as possible.
But the town is weary from this campaign and needs a rest.
Dodging a Sex Offender
Last March the West Tisbury library trustees suddenly found themselves confronting what for most small town volunteers was the dilemma of a lifetime. Disturbing reports had come about the director of the town library through the town police department. Howard Curtis, who had been hired in June of two thousand and six, was an alleged sex offender. At that point there were no charges against Mr. Curtis, only allegations.

The summer season began when the squid started to bite. I knew it had come when Adam’s clothing got all mucked up with ink and slime. His hands would be stained black. This began happening every day.
