An Edgartown woman has decided to euthanize her dog after he was involved in a fight with another dog earlier this month.

The Edgartown selectmen opened a vicious or nuisance dog hearing Monday about a fight involving Ann Wales’s dog, Tommy, a pit bull/hound cross and Damon Burke’s dog, Ramune, an American Staffordshire terrier.

On July 6 assistant animal control officer Jennifer Morgan said a call about a dog fight came through the communications center. A second call came that the situation was under control, she said, but she responded anyway.

The owners of the dog believed to have killed a miniature horse in Edgartown last weekend have decided to euthanize the dog, while the owner of the horse said she will not press further charges.

Mugsy, a three-year-old neutered American Staffordshire-bulldog cross, will be put down on Monday, animal control officer Barbara Prada said, nine days after two miniature horses were attacked and one killed at an Edgartown farm. The incident rattled residents of the Edgartown neighborhood and highlighted what animal control officers said are rising dog incidents on the Island.

The owners of a dog that allegedly attacked and killed a miniature horse over the weekend have agreed to euthanize the animal, the Edgartown animal control officer told the town selectmen Monday.

A dog that is believed to have killed a miniature horse and injured another Saturday is under quarantine at the Edgartown pound, animal control officer Barbara Prada said early Sunday afternoon.

West Tisbury animal control officer Joan Jenkinson has confirmed an incident involving a farmer who shot a dog that was killing his chickens last week.

Mrs. Jenkinson told the Gazette yesterday that while everyone involved is upset over what happened, no formal complaint will be filed. And it was completely lawful for the farmer to shoot the dog, she said.

“What happened was between the farmer and the dog,” Mrs. Jenkinson said. She described the events that took place on Sunday, Nov. 11.

Aquinnah selectmen took disciplinary action this week against a dog owner whose Labrador retriever bit a houseguest in the face.

Selectmen learned that a yellow Lab rescue dog, Mac, belonging to Ariana Feldman, bit Benjamin Higgins in the face on Jan. 6 in a social situation, resulting in 32 stitches. Mr. Higgins was visiting Ms. Feldman for dinner. This was the dog’s second biting incident.
