This month the Chilmark Library is hosting an art show called Sugar-Coated Barnyard on the Moon. The show is a collection of work by three Island artists and includes watercolors of barnyard animals by Lauren Clark, mixed media paintings by Darcie-Lee Hanaway, and photographs of candy by Elissa Turnbull.
Each of the artists was inspired in unique ways.
Sail MV Sale
Sail Martha’s Vineyard is presenting an exhibit and sale of maritime art, jewelry, crafts and note cards by several Island artists and photographers. The exhibit opens with an artists’ reception from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, at the office of Sail MV located at 110 Main street in Vineyard Haven and transformed for the holidays into an art gallery,
The hours of the show are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily throughout Dec. 23. A portion of proceeds from any sales benefits Sail MV’s free sailing programs for Island kids.
Art in the Stacks
Bill Buckley is the featured artist for the month of December at the Vineyard Haven Library’s Art in the Stacks program.
In his own words, Mr. Buckley describes his influences as “Picasso, Monet, Gauguin, Botticelli, Magritte, Hopper and Dali to name a few.”
Ayn Chase turns 85 on Dec. 11 and to celebrate she is thanking Island customers with a 15 per cent discount. On what you may ask? Mrs. Chase is a weaver working over the years on every type of textile good but is perhaps best known for her placemats and lampshades.
She estimates that she has woven over 27,500 placemats and made over 3,600 shades (not counting the tiny ones made for dollhouses) during her career.
Old Sculpin Opens
The Old Sculpin Gallery will be open for a brief show of artwork by Nina Gomez Gordon on Nov. 25 and 26 from noon to 5 p.m. On view will be paintings spanning over 17 years, including abstracts, figure studies from life, and landscapes, many works never before exhibited.
