Art in a Barn

Art, music, dancing and hors d’oeuvres — what can you add to that? More art, of course. Robert Hall Parker will open a show of his recent works at the Dole barn off Rogers Path in West Tisbury on Sunday, Oct. 24, from 6 to 9 p.m. A southern-born artist who hails originally from North Carolina, Mr. Parker’s aesthetics developed from graffiti and outsider art. The work that will be shown by the artist includes character sketches and other visual devices aimed at creating a certain atmosphere in the rustic space of a barn.

Art Sale

The Louisa Gould Gallery will be holding an end of season sale from Thursday, Oct. 7 through Monday, Oct. 11.

Most of the art will be on sale from 10 to 30 per cent off. Louisa Gould will also offer her photography at a 40 per cent savings. The sale is only for inventory in the gallery; it does not apply to special orders.

The Louisa Gould Gallery is located at 54 Main street in Vineyard Haven. For more details, call 508-693-7373.

Pottery Throw Down

Enjoy both the creative process and the result at Candy Shweder’s fourth annual Up-Island Pottery demonstration this Saturday, Oct. 9 from 4 to 6 p.m.

It’s an open studio event with Candy throwing clay at the wheel and deep discounts around the room. There will be wine and cheese too. The word’s still out on whether it will be okay to throw the delectables. The Up-Island pottery studio/barn is located in Chilmark. To get there take Middle Road to Fulling Mill Road and follow the balloons.

Art by JoAnne Rice

West Tisbury Library will be hosting an art reception on Oct. 8 at 4 p.m. entitled Painting as a Journey into Self featuring artist JoAnne Scotford Rice.

Ms. Rice is an expressive arts therapist with interests in genealogy, Island history, American Indian spirituality, and Theravada Buddhism.

This retrospective of her work reveals her many interests as well as her journey through art and its many mediums including painting, drawing and photography.

The artists and craftsmen living at Island Elderly Housing, Inc. (IEH) will be holding a show of their work on Oct. 9 from 1 to 3 p.m. This is the third annual show featuring the work of the residents and has become a “must do” event on Columbus Day Weekend.

West Tisbury artist Leslie Baker recently opened a show of her landscape work at the Copley Society of Art in Boston. A painter, portrait artist and children’s book author, Ms. Baker’s plein air oil studies are well known on the Vineyard, where she has lived year-round since 1997. The Copley show is anchored by a sweeping triptych of Long Point Wildlife Refuge on a hazy, late summer day. The show opened on Sept. 11 and will hang until Oct. 8. The Copley Society of Art, founded in 1879, is located at 158 Newbury street in Boston.
