Silver Linings is the theme for the next community art show at Featherstone Center for the Arts, opening April 5. The Art of Flowers follows in May.
Chris Morse fell in love with West Tisbury’s Granary Gallery as a teenager, when he worked summers there through high school. Fifteen years ago, he purchased the gallery with his wife, Sheila. Five years after that, they bought the Field Gallery, also in West Tisbury. And another five or so years later, they purchased what is now the North Water Gallery in Edgartown.
The North Water Gallery announces its opening show for the summer season, which runs from July 1 to July 14. The following artists will be featured:
Twelve Hundred dollars and a week of professional wall time was the award for three Island high school seniors who won the Martha’s Vineyard Arts Association scholarship given by the Old Sculpin Gallery. It is hard to know which is better: invaluable experience, or valuable resources.
This year the winners of the scholarship were Lonni Phillips, Naomi Scott and Maggie Howard.
On Sunday, there was an opening reception for this annual showing of the recipients of the scholarship; their exhibit runs until June 26.
Some six weeks ago, by the light of a slowly rising full moon, painter Ray Ellis stole away to a silent corner of Edgartown and settled in to capture an image of the swollen moon creeping up over Chappaquiddick. Facing down-harbor, he had a perfect view of the Chappy bank, dotted with lights from the houses nestled along its coast.
“The moon was just coming up,” Mr. Ellis said yesterday. Carefully, he captured the silvery reflection of the great white globe in the harbor, a lone sailboat suspended in the water.

The event showcased projects from 38 students in Sense of Wonder’s winter and spring art classes and was, said director and founder Pam Benjamin, “the culmination of the artists’ hard work.”
In a first for her gallery, Louisa Gould this week opens a European show, European Subjects Painted by Island Artists. The public opening reception is on Saturday, June 19, free from 5 to 7 p.m. with live music and refreshments.
The show includes five artists; Anne Grandin, Claudio Gasparini, Jules Worthington, Donna Blackburn and Louisa Gould.
