Studio Sale Saturday

Doors open tomorrow 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Vineyard Playhouse for a one-day studio sale of overstock, seconds and samples from Island artisans.

A large format, hardcover coffee table edition of the book Secret Spaces, Martha’s Vineyard Beyond the Landmarks, has been featured this past week at the Wedding and Portrait Photographers International trade show in Las Vegas by the book’s manufacturer, GraphiStudios.

The book showcases a collection of Vineyard images by former Martha’s Vineyard resident and Gazette contributing photographer Michael Zide, with text by Island writers and artists.

Island artist Peg Thayer opens an exhibition of her recent paintings at the Chilmark Library on Saturday, March 1, with a reception from 3 to 5 p.m.

The show continues during library hours through March 27.

Peggy Thayer has been a practicing painter for more than 30 years, working in a variety of media including acrylics, watercolors, pastels and oils. Her recent landscapes portray her intuitive relationship with nature.

High school senior Rebecca Swartwood sits casually on an artist’s stool, remarkably poised and well-spoken. She exudes an inner confidence, without the bravado often associated with youth. She brims with enthusiasm at the life she sees ahead of her, with art an integral but not overriding part of a well-considered career path.

Each winter Featherstone Center for the Arts, the Vineyard’s only year-round art center, undergoes a rebirth.

While students register for art classes, the gallery is refurbished. This year a new track has been installed around the perimeter of the gallery to better display works of art. And the gallery floor has been sanded down to bare wood and sealed for a gleaming new surface.

Vineyard Haven artist Marston Clough is exhibiting original prints at Island Art Gallery-Kennedy Studios in Vineyard Haven. The works include etchings, linocuts, woodcuts and lithographs. Each print is an original, done by hand, and the artist prints very limited editions, numbering fewer than 10, all with strong Vineyard themes — lobstermen and fishermen at work and boats at rest.

The artist studied drawing at the Massachusetts College of Art and etching and printmaking at the Worcester Art Museum.
