Perhaps everyone with an overflowing inbox needs a basket. Kari Lønning, the nationally recognized and collected artist who makes contemporary baskets, explains: “Though many contemporary baskets still suggest a vessel form, often these forms no longer have openings or bottoms — they suggest use rather offer one. As we no longer feel the need to fill baskets with something physical, the contained space becomes as important as the container giving it form.”

North Water Gallery (formerly Gardner Colby Gallery) in Edgartown invites everyone to an artist’s reception for Suzanne Crocker on Thursday, June 26, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Inspired primarily with barns and seaside cottages, Ms. Crocker explores color, shape and mood through her bold and dynamic paintings. Her foundation is a vivid orange canvas and layers color to create an image which can be both soothing and intense. Since her introduction, she has quickly become a favorite here.

Eisenhauer Gallery’s new show, Island Inspired, showcases artists who work with the Island as their muse, in particular John MacGowan, Eric Abrecht and Mikel Wintermantel.

The Belushi Pisano Gallery kicks off its summer season with a group exhibition of works by many Vineyard artists including the gallery’s director, Jessica Pisano, metal artist Graeme Bradlee, as well as jewelers Andrea Hartman, Ronni Simon and former Island resident Tracy Page Smith. The show also includes hand-formed lamps by Jenik K. Munafo and furniture by John Thayer.

Nancy Noble Gardner calls her solo photography show opening this weekend at Featherstone Center for the Arts an honor: “I‘m excited by the total freedom I was given, and I chose photographs which are most significant to me, creating a retrospective.”
