Deborah Colter Show

The original mixed media works of local Edgartown artist Deborah T. Colter will be featured in a solo show opening Saturday, July 26, at the Cousen Rose Gallery in Oak Bluffs. There will be an opening reception Saturday, July 26, from 5 to 8 p.m.

The artist reception for Jain Tarnower will be held on Saturday, July 26, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Dragonfly Gallery, 91 Dukes County avenue in Oak Bluffs. The show runs from July 23 through August 3.

Ms. Tarnower has brought the almost-forgotten genre of oil portraiture to new heights with animal portraits ranging from miniature paintings to engaging eight-foot canvases. This classical American style has placed Ms. Tarnower in the forefront of this unique venue.

Three artists will present new exhibitions opening Sunday at Carol Craven Gallery on Breakdown Lane in Vineyard Haven.

Christie Scheele’s show, Changing Winds, is a selection of exquisite atmospheric landscape paintings of Martha’s Vineyard and New York landscapes. This is Ms. Scheele’s fifth exhibition with the gallery.

A wide selection of beautiful eastern seaboard photographs by well-known photographer, Nancy Ellison, also will show at Carol Craven, Ms. Ellison’s fourth show there.

This past winter Eisenhauer Gallery owner Elizabeth Eisenhauer and Kaitlyn Ruitenberg went to Brussels, Belgium to visit French artist Michel Brosseau; in Mr. Brosseau’s studio they felt as if they had entered a 19th century European atelier. Canvases are everywhere, filled with colored buoys and sailboat linens bright as if sunlight were pouring out from the canvases. Long drapes hang on tall sunny windows that fill the studio with a warm yellow glow while the murmur of Brussels traffic comes through an open window.

This past fall, three American women went camping with the Qashqai nomads in the mountains of southwestern Iran. They came back from their travels with amazing stories and, perhaps more impressive still, with the hand-woven Qashqai rugs known as Gabbehs.

Now these Gabbeh rugs, made by small collectives of nomadic women, are the focus of a two-week trunk show at the Mansion House in Vineyard Haven.
