A Watertown man was listed in fair condition at Massachusetts General Hospital Wednesday after an accident where he became pinned under a garbage truck following a collision while he was riding his bike.

William Cress, who owns a home on Down Harbor Road in Katama, was transported to the Boston hospital by ambulance from the Martha's Vineyard Hospital Tuesday afternoon.

According to Edgartown police officer Michael Gazaille, a Bruno’s garbage truck was traveling on south on Katama Road when the driver made a left-hand turn onto a road across from Katama General Store.

No charges will be filed against the driver of the tractor trailer that was involved in a fatal bicycle accident on July 6 in Vineyard Haven, a Cape and Islands district attorney confirmed yesterday.

A Melrose woman who took a trip to the Vineyard for the day with her husband, friends and young family, was killed in a grisly accident on Tuesday afternoon when she fell from her bike on State Road in Vineyard Haven into the path of an oncoming tractor trailer.

Early Summer Tragedy

Between 1987 and 2004 there were five fatal bicycle accidents on the Vineyard, according to Gazette records. On Tuesday this week one more was added to the archives and today’s edition is unmistakably colored by sadness as it carries the news of the death of Dina Dececca, age forty, who died in a horrific accident on State Road in Vineyard Haven while riding her bicycle on a day trip to the Island early Tuesday afternoon.

A 40-year-old woman cyclist from Melrose was killed in Vineyard Haven on Tuesday afternoon when she was struck by a tractor trailer owned by the E.C. Cottle Lumber Co., state police have confirmed.

Edgartown police responded to two major accidents this past week: one involving a pair of Harley-Davidson motorcycles and another involving a pair of bicycles. In both cases, one person involved in the accident was seriously injured and airlifted by helicopter to Boston-based hospitals.
