Senior girls’ lacrosse captain Alayna Hutchinson smashed the program’s career scoring record this year with 193 goals and 150 assists. Hutchinson finished the season with 65 goals and 30 assists. Senior co-captain Taylor Poggi was second in scoring with 47 goals and 16 assists; junior Molly Wallace had 33 goals and 22 assists. Junior Isabel Smith, the team’s top defender, had 17 and 16 assists. The girls finished the season with a 5-13 record and were 2-4 in the Eastern Athletic Conference.

Home sports action picks up after April vacation on Monday with boys’ lacrosse taking on Dartmouth at 3 p.m. On Tuesday girls’ lacrosse hosts league opponent Coyle and Cassidy at 3 p.m., and sailing takes on Barnstable at the Sailing Camp Park at 3 p.m.

Spring sports began this week as boys’ tennis and girls’ lacrosse played their first matches of the season on Thursday against Dover-Sherborn. Scores were unavailable at press time.

Boys’ lacrosse takes on Fairhaven today at home at 4 p.m. Track and field hosts Abington in a dual meet beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

What follows is the first in a two-part preview of the spring sports season. Next week will spotlight girls’ tennis, baseball, softball and sailing.

The game of lacrosse was the clear focus of the sporting world on the Vineyard this past week as both the boys’ and girls’ high school varsity teams hosted games in the opening round of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament.

In the first high school state championship game ever played
on-Island, the boys' varsity lacrosse team of the Martha's
Vineyard Regional High School finished its season yesterday two goals
shy of a Division III state title.
