Home sports action picks up after April vacation on Monday with boys’ lacrosse taking on Dartmouth at 3 p.m. On Tuesday girls’ lacrosse hosts league opponent Coyle and Cassidy at 3 p.m., and sailing takes on Barnstable at the Sailing Camp Park at 3 p.m.
On Wednesday the track teams host Bishop Stang at 3 p.m., while boys’ tennis plays Bishop Feehan on home court, and baseball takes on visiting Somerset at 3:15 p.m.
Boys’ tennis and boys’ track are undefeated. Girls’ tennis has just one loss.
Sailing
The sailing team has moved to a 6-4 season record. Last Saturday the team sailed in a quad meet against Belmont Hill, Dennis-Yarmouth and Tabor Academy, sweeping the first two teams 3-0, 3-0 before falling to Tabor. Still, head coach Andrew Burr said the Vineyard sailed well against the longstanding powerhouse.
“That’s what you want to see, is that we are competitive with the top-tier schools in New England,” he said.
On Sunday the team took on Hotchkiss, St. George’s and North Kingston. The Vineyard sailed well against, but ultimately fell to the North Kingston Skippers. St. George’s was undefeated.
The Vineyarders beat Dartmouth in their opening meet two weeks ago and swept Nauset and Monomoy. Last Tuesday, they earned a 3-0 win against Pope John Paul 2nd.
The varsity lineup is largely set for the season, with seniors James Ulyatt and Tyler Shapiro teaming for the third year to sail in the first boat. Sophomores Raz Sayre and Anna Flaherty, sophomores Eli Hanschka and Russell Shapiro, and sophomores Charlie Murano and Ellie Reagan partner for boats two, three and four and sophomore Elie Jordi sails with senior Doug Andrade in the fifth boat.
Tennis
The tennis teams continue their winning ways. Boys’ and girls’ squads had 5-0 wins over league opponent Bishop Stang last Monday. Seniors Kent Leonard and Annie Burton, playing in the number two spots for their squads, swept their opponents 6-0, 6-0. Senior Natty Schneider earned a 6-1, 6-0 win, and senior Justice Yennie went 6-1, 6-1. In doubles, junior Patrick McCarthy and senior Ryan Sawyer went 6-1, 6-0; senior Sean McAndrews and sophomore went 6-0, 6-1.
In the girls’ match, sophomore Sam Potter went 6-3, 6-3, and senior Dylan Brockmeyer earned a 6-0, 6-1 win. Seniors Julia Cooper and Annabelle Hackney were 6-1, 6-3 at number one doubles, and senior Katherine Donegan and sophomore Diamond Araujo earned a 6-4, 6-3 win at second doubles.
Last week the girls traveled to Coyle, where they won, while the boys’ team beat Coyle at home. While the singles lineup remained the same, coach Ned Fennessy started four players on the doubles court who had yet to see varsity time this season: freshman Connor Downing and senior Sterling Meacham paired at first doubles for a 6-0, 6-1 win, and freshmen Dunovan Belisle partnered with sophomore Charlie Parkhurst for a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
Track and Field
The younger athletes on the track teams competed in the annual Freshman-Sophomore Meet in Hingham on Saturday, with freshman Anders Nelson throwing a personal best 125’1” in the javelin to earn a fifth-place finish in his event, the highest placement of a Vineyarder. The meet saw 43 schools from around the state participate. In the 400-metre hurdles, sophomore Kevin Montambault ran a 1:07 to take eighth place in the boys’ run, and sophomore Nicole Pearson took 14th in the girls’ run with a time of 1:20. Julia Neville placed 23rd in the 800-metre run, and sophomore Grace Oslyn took 18th in discus.
The varsity track teams both had wins against nonleague opponent Durfee last Monday. Junior Joe Turney, who already qualified for the Massachusetts state meet in the javelin, threw a personal best 165’1”. Senior Andrew Freitas also qualified for states with his 41’2.5” throw in the shot put. Senior Jacob Lawrence took first in the 100 and 200-metre dashes with times of 11.7 seconds and 24 seconds.
Though their ranks were thinned due to a field trip, the Vineyard girls picked up key wins in all areas of the meet. Sophomore Bailey Moreis placed in four events, winning the 100 and 200 metres, and taking second in long jump and triple jump. Senior Maggie Riseborough took first in the shot put and discus, throwing 97’3” in the latter event, and junior Willoe Maynard ran to first place finishes in both the mile and two-mile.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Last Saturday the team took on Marblehead at home and fell 17-7, with senior Alayna Hutchinson and junior Molly Wallace scoring three goals each, and freshman KC Wallace scoring one. Freshman goalie Sam Hargy had 10 saves.
The Vineyarders had a rematch with Dartmouth Monday, with head coach Betsy Dripps reporting that the squad showed “tremendous improvement” in play from the teams’ first meeting, playing strong until the end. The final score was 19-17. Hargy again had 10 saves; KC Wallace and sophomore Olivia Ogden helmed the defensive effort. Junior Emma Yuen scored her first goal of the season on a breakaway run.
In a Tuesday league game against Bishop Feehan, the Vineyarders fell 12-10. The girls are now 1-5 on the season.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The young team turned in its best performance of the season on Wednesday against Littleton, pushing the game into double overtime before falling 6-5. Head coach Chris Greene described the game as a back-and-forth struggle, with the Vineyard showing improvement in possession and doing a good job picking up ground balls. Senior Thomas Wilkins and junior Sam Burke each scored two goals, with Burke picking up an assist as well. Senior captain Nick Costello had one goal and one assist, and seniors Huck Burke and Marc Natichioni had one assist each. Freshman goalie Eli Lakin was 8 for 14 in the net.
“If we can continue to find confidence offensively, I think a win is around the corner,” Coach Greene said.
The Vineyarders faced tough nonleague opponents last week, losing to Swampscott and Falmouth. The boys are still searching for their first win of the season. Scores from Thursday’s tournament at Bridgewater-Raynham were unavailable at press time.
Baseball
The baseball team competed in the annual Westwood Tournament over April vacation; scores were unavailable at press time.
The team moved to a 3-2 record after entering league play in a close 3-2 loss to Bishop Stang last Tuesday and falling 13-1 to visiting Coyle and Cassidy last Wednesday. During the previous week, the team earned two wins over New Testament Christian School.
In the home opener against New Testament, sophomore Tim Roberts had his first varsity start, pitching three innings, allowing one run and striking out eight to earn the win. Roberts was relieved by freshman Nate D’Angelo (two innings pitched, two strikeouts) and sophomore Henry Gallagher (two innings pitched, one earned run, one strikeout).
Softball
After a strong 3-0 start, the softball team entered league play last week and had its first loss on Monday to visiting Bishop Stang, 16-3. Then against Coyle and Cassidy, the Vineyarders were shut out, 13-0, to move to a 3-2 season record. The team picked up wins against Falmouth and Cambridge Rindge Latin over the weekend On April 5, the Vineyarders hosted Falmouth and won.
