The annual Christmas Bird Count was held on Dec. 30. Thirteen teams and feeder watchers tallied 18,679 birds of 119 species

The annual Great Backyard Bird Count concluded on Feb. 20. The results are not yet complete.

A review of all the sightings mentioned in this column shows that we observed 264 species of birds on Martha’s Vineyard in 2016.

Birds can be blown off course by strong winds of 25 to 30 miles per hour and with stronger gusts of 40 mph.

Birdsong is on the increase, and more species will start singing in the coming weeks — a sure sign of the coming spring.
