Well, it is spring but winter refuses to leave on schedule. Last Friday we awoke to a seven-inch snowfall. Now if the jet stream would kindly move north we could enjoy a taste of spring. Today is Good Friday and the beginning of the Easter weekend. Monday is April Fool’s Day, so be wary of practical jokes.
Chilmark has every reason to be proud of its citizens who volunteer to challenge some of the town’s problems and needs. It isn’t easy to find time in our busy lives of the 21st century to do pro bono work for a town, but some people do it every day.

Elisha Smith was my son’s great grandfather. Chris Clark could not pronounce Elisha’s name when he was little, but he visited one of ’Lisha’s farms every Sunday and took to calling him “Papa Moo.” We all knew and loved Elisha. After extensive public input last summer, the transportation committee working on redesign of the Chappaquiddick Point has come up with a final design. This spring, a roundabout will be built where the traffic from the ferry, the waiting line, the main road, and the parking lot converge.
In 1912 Phidelah Rice and his wife Elizabeth opened the Phidelah Rice School for the Spoken Word, a summer school for acting, at Trinity Church adjacent to the Tabernacle. The school was moved in 1914 to Arlington avenue in East Chop and a playhouse was added in 1924.

In boys’ basketball, captains Izak Browne and Jack Roberts earned Eastern Athletic Conference honors for the second year in the row. Girls’ basketball captain Jennie Lindland also repeated as an All-Star, and was joined by senior teammates Katie Stewart (also a captain) and Maggie Riseborough.
The fisherman were out at the Mill Pond in West Tisbury this past Sunday in search of trout, giving hope that this winter’s curtain call will soon be ending. The water is getting warmer and the resilient trout that hunkered down for the cold months in our ponds and streams now swim about and feed alongside the newly replenished stocks brought in each spring from hatcheries on the mainland.
