Samplers Show Lives of Island’s Little Women

There will be an opening reception for the Martha’s Vineyard Museum’s newest exhibit, When This You See, Remember Me: Samplers from the Museum Collection, on Saturday, Nov. 27 from 3 to 5 p.m.

Samplers were often created to signify a rite of passage for young girls. The sampler was a way to show off skill, record important family information and convey morality through a verse or two.

Sail MV is Seaworthy

Sail MV Is Seaworthy

Seaworthy Gallery will begin a Sail MV benefit weekend with an opening reception tonight, Friday, Nov. 26, from 4 to 7 p.m. with wine, oysters and hors d’oeuvres at the Beach Road, Vineyard Haven gallery.

Over the Thanksgiving weekend, a portion of Seaworthy’s every sale will be donated to Sail Martha’s Vineyard. The gallery displays fine art of Island harbor scenes, tall ships, wooden boats as well as antique nautical charts.

Ever wonder what that odd heirloom, the one stashed away in the closet or displayed prominently in the sitting room, is actually worth? Well, you’re in luck because on Saturday, Dec. 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the Martha’s Vineyard Museum is holding an appraisal day.

Appraisal experts, Sara C. Wishart and Stuart Whitehurst, will be on hand to evaluate your prized objects. Items may even be consigned for sale with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the Martha’s Vineyard Museum.

Kids Wanna Sugar Rush? Send Them to Auditions

IMP is looking for many young actors for a new musical, Sugar Rush, The Short and Sweet Adventures of the Gingerbread Boy.

Auditions are open to anyone in grades three and up with a desire to perform and a willingness to commit. Actors do not need to prepare anything for the audition and every attempt is made to make the audition fun and painless. Auditions are open on Tuesday, Nov. 30 and Wednesday, Dec. 1 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Edgartown School instrumental room

A Can or Two Will Open Doors to Oz for You

Get your flying monkeys for free as the Capawock Theatre in Vineyard Haven celebrates the Thanksgiving holiday with a free screening of The Wizard of Oz on Friday, Nov. 26.

The show starts at 2 p.m. and benefits the Island Food Pantry. Please bring at least one nonperishable food item.

Oh, Deer! Shotgun Contest Starts Off Hunting Season

The Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club’s annual Fall Shotgun Shoot, open to the public, begins at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 28.

Everyone is eligible for prizes in this shotgun marksmanship competition, on the day before the shotgun deer season opens.

The Vineyard Nursing Association announced that Lena Vanderhoop received the Effie Chalmers Wadell award for exceptional service in the delivery of home care at the 40th Annual Home Care Aide Celebration, co-sponsored by the Massachusetts Council for Home Care Aide Services and the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs.

Workshop Helps Nonprofits Advance Social Networking

If your organization is looking to become more social media savvy, the Martha’s Vineyard Donors Collaborative fall workshop will provide tools and knowledge needed for nonprofits looking to use social media effectively for communication and fund-raising.

The workshop will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 30, at the Hebrew Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with registration and coffee at 8:30 a.m. The cost is $15 per person, including lunch.
