Where were you at 7:40 p.m. last Tuesday evening? We, heeding the word of a local weatherman, were in the parking lot at Menemsha Beach watching the space station with the space shuttle moored to it, orbit the earth . . . at least seeing the six minutes that it was visible over Menemsha. It was a beautiful night and we counted ourselves lucky to have such clear skies. It is kind of hard to top that as the highlight of the week!

Today is the day, but I have been seeing sure signs of spring before this. They are: convertibles with tops down last weekend, Brazilians with flip flops on at stores, people playing tennis outside in tennis dresses, and a fly on my fruit drink on my back porch. The only thing missing, and I just might not have been home to catch it, is seeing Pam Benjamin rollerblading around West Chop. Then I know it’s spring.

The sun has sure been a welcome sight this week. When you read this column spring will be here. Even though the wind has kept the temperature down we have to remember that the wind is what keeps us ten to fifteen degrees cooler in August. For that we are always thankful.

Crocuses are flourishing in gardens around East Chop as the pinkletinks croak down at Crystal Lake. We forced forsythia to bloom inside, with stalks stuck in a vase.

Our honorable Chief Medicine Man Luther T. Madison died on March 12 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. He was a man of incredible courage in the face of the cancer he had endured for the past 16 years. He was known for his quiet sense of humor, and his integrity. Luther was a wisdom keeper, well-loved by one and all, a mentor to many, and a dignified town father. His presence in Aquinnah will be greatly missed.

Spring is Here

Today is the first day of spring and it arrived precisely at 7:44 a.m. This is the moment when the noontime sun crosses from the Southern Hemisphere, across the Equator, and into our Northern Hemisphere. From here on our days will get longer than our nights. Day and night are about even, at 12 hours, though the actual moment of sunrise and sunset is not so exact.
