The sun has sure been a welcome sight this week. When you read this column spring will be here. Even though the wind has kept the temperature down we have to remember that the wind is what keeps us ten to fifteen degrees cooler in August. For that we are always thankful.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their birthday this past week. Big balloons go out to Brenda DeOliveira who celebrated her day March 15; Christopher Cartier, March 16; Austin Chandler, and Lillian Kurelja, March 17; and to Amy Fligor and Sarah Taylor, who celebrated March 18.

Special birthday wishes to Gail Avakian who celebrated her day March 6. Extra balloons go out to Tom Hiller who celebrated his birthday this past week.

The public is invited to a candidate forum for Edgartown voters on Wednesday, April 1 at 7 p.m. at the Old Whaling Church in the Baylies Room sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Martha’s Vineyard. This forum is an opportunity to hear statements from those running for public office and to ask questions on topics of special importance to your town and to the Island. Write-in candidates are also invited to attend and to participate.

Ralph was out in our backyard last Sunday raking and when I joined him we noticed some signs of plants that were planted last year and we were thrilled that they had survived. It was in the middle of that conversation when we heard the sound. The sound that starts the official spring season, the sound that rings though the fields, the sound is that of the “ping”, the ping of the baseball bat connecting to that white ball and the sound of cheering after the “ping.” Yes, it is really spring as the cars go to and from the club picking up and dropping off their children for either practice or a game.

The other true sign of spring is the Dairy Queen opened on St. Patrick’s Day. I drove by and there were the lines. The school kids made a beeline after school right to the doors and the parking lot was filled with adults who were also looking forward to stopping the cravings for a buster bar or even a slice of the famous DQ cake.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
