On Feb. 7, a swift moving fire consumed my family’s home on Main street in Vineyard Haven.

In the early 1970s, I was looking for a job. Everett Poole needed a secretary. I applied, and he hired me, maybe because we were both progeny of whaling captains.

In the aftermath of the Ocean View fire I would like to first thank the firefighters, EMTs and police from all the Island towns that fought the blaze.
