Do you ever feel like you’ve over-scheduled yourself and nothing you’ve committed to has gone quite according to plan? If you haven’t had these feelings then you are a far better person than I. My big oops this week was thinking Tuesday was Monday and, therefore, I had another day to write this column. Boy, was I wrong. Please accept my apologies for the brevity and lack of extra fun facts.
Jesse and Denny Jason set out on an adventure and, yes, they had one. Off to Ohio — Jesse’s old stomping grounds — they went. They visited family, toured and danced their way around the state while wearing big smiles and having lots of laughs.
Saint Kitts and Nevis, the dual island nation, welcomed Anne and Jonathan Mayhew for a much-needed getaway and respite. One-year old granddaughter Ida Peach Mayhew caught up with them, along with her parents Molly and Matt. Her sweet little self, with kissed cheeks and nose, will surely bring back sunshine and a sense calm to those of us who wintered over in town.
Annette Cingle, her daughter Annalee Hoy and Scott McDowell have returned from a glorious romp in the Bahamas. Blue waters, white sand beaches, sunshine and a whole lot of relaxation were just what the doctor ordered.
Not only did they get a vacation, but their big love of a pup, Ozzie, also went on holiday all the way across town to a home overlooking Squibnocket Pond. Ozzie’s friends and admirers, Tim and Laurisa Rich, opened their doors to the furry goofball and had a grand time taking him for adventures. Ozzie is back at home with his humans and likely looking forward to another adventure with his second family.
Not many of us knew him but we certainly knew how special he was to his Chilmarker sons John and Peter Keene and their sisters Lisa Kerns, Suzy and Katy Metell. John C. Keene may have claimed the title of professor at the University of Pennsylvania but to them he was Dad. Along with his extended family, he will be missed locally by grandchildren Adelaide, Thea, Ella, Lathrop, Liam and Mischa. I’d like to offer my condolences to the entire extended Keene family including his wife of 48 years, Anna Maria.
A “job well done” goes to the members of the Chilmark Fire Department who answered when Oak Bluffs Fire-EMS rang out a third alarm asking for assistance fighting the Ocean View fire. Captain Chris Smith and firefighters Keona Chung and John Cabral represented Chilmark at the scene while chief Jeremy Bradshaw, captain Alan Porter and firefighters Victor Silva and Emma Mayhew stood by at the North Road station. While the majority of Island firefighters were at the scene in Oak Bluffs, they were ready to act should anything else arise elsewhere.
Members from Tri-Town Ambulance responded to assist with firefighter rehab at the scene. Paramedic Bradley Carroll and EMTs Amanda Gonsalves and Samantha Smith worked under the guidance of paramedic Ben Davey to assure firefighters were well looked after and cared for as the day went on. Job well done, team.
Mark your calendars for the Special Town Meeting to be held at the Community Center on Saturday March 26 at 1 p.m. There is one warrant article that, in summary, states, “To see if the Town will vote to appropriate $1,200,000.00, to pay additional costs of constructing a replacement firehouse and constructing an ambulance building at 399 & 401 Middle Road, and for the payment of all other costs incidental and related thereto...”
The full warrant is posted on the town website and hard copies are posted at the Chilmark Community Center, library, town hall and Texaco. Be sure to read it. Be sure to participate.
