Antiques Auction

Antiques lovers may preview a midsummer auction from 1 p.m . on Saturday, August 7, at the Grange Hall on State Road in West Tisbury. A wine and cheese reception begins at 5 p.m. as part of the Fine Antique, Marine and Estate Auction with items from estates on Island and all up and down the East Coast.

Pulitzer prize-winning film critic Joe Morgenstern will present an evening of conversation about the movie industry, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center on Thursday, August 12.

Mr. Morgenstern has entitled his talk Quo Vadis — Not the Movie, the Movies, and he promises “an extended and informal conversation with the audience (their questions and my answers, plus some hopefully relevant stories and selected snippets of gossip”) about the state of the movies and where they seem to be going.”

Saltwater Gallery, in the rolling fields along Lambert’s Cove Road, presents artist Ashley Medowski’s new mixed media: Historic Island Landmarks.

Miss Medowski’s once-a-summer reception will be on Sunday, August 8, from 4 to 8 p.m. Celebrating the old Vineyard, Miss Medowski has painted what she calls “portraits” of favorite Island scenes including the Vanderhoop Homestead, Menemsha Market, and the Old Cranberry Bog in Lambert’s Cove.

A special program featuring the author and illustrator for Nighttide on a Vineyard Farm will be held on Tuesday, August 10 from 4 to 6 p.m. at State Road Restaurant as a benefit for the Island Grown Initiative (IGI).

Dean’s List

The following students were named to the dean’s list at the Savannah College of Art and Design for the spring quarter 2010:

It may be a cliche on the radio, but around the piano at a Circuit avenue barroom sing-along on Monday night, the audience sang the old Billy Joel lyrics with nuance and exuberance: “Sing us a song, you’re the piano man, sing us a song tonight.” David Crohan was playing his Kurzweil electric piano.

What could be better? Well, soonafter Mr. Crohan was accompanied by his old friends Hugh Taylor and Merrily Fenner and more.

Art Around Edgartown

The Eisenhauer Gallery’s final exhibition of the season, Inward and Windward, opens with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, August 12. It will be part of An Evening of Fine Art, the Edgartown gallery stroll.

The Eisenhauer reception will offer libations and music by Mike Benjamin to celebrate artistic work by Michel Brosseau, Heidi Palmer and Karen Tusinski.

If you’ve eaten a chocolate bar in the past year, you may have contributed to the world’s growing slavery program. Have a pair of Levi’s jeans? You’re mostly in the clear. Sporting a new pair of Sketchers? You may want to return them.

“There are so many invisible connections we have to slavery that we perpetuate without even knowing it,” said Brant Christopher, artist in residence for the anti-slavery organization Not For Sale. “We tell the story of what’s happening with human trafficking in the world today.”

The Chappaquiddick Summer Music Festival continues on Thursday, August 12 with a recital by soprano Jeanine De Bique, accompanied by pianist Keun-A Lee, at 8 p.m. at the Chappaquiddick Community Center.

Miss De Bique’s recital will include Cinq Mélodies Populaires Greques by Maurice Ravel, songs by Hugo Wolf and Fernando Obradors, Ah! non son io che parlo by Mozart, and selected spirituals. A reception follows the concert and everyone is invited to attend.

On a Tuesday afternoon, voice trills bounced around the grounds at the Yard off Middle Road in Chilmark. Some performers relaxed their diaphragms, lying on yoga mats on the floor of the barn studio. No dancers in tights or leotards ran in and out of the theatre on this day; opera singers have taken over the Yard for the next two weeks for the annual Yard Arts Opera performance.
