The Aquinnah Public Library deck was full on Saturday as everyone learned how to make ice cream. Thank you to the staff for such a success. Tomorrow is Build a Fairy House with Barbara at 1 p.m.

The death of Ed Colligan will be remembered as our greatest loss, summer of 2014. Ed died at home last week. We Tisburians, and, in fact, so many the Island over, have lost a true friend.

Chilmark Town Column: August 15

Chilmark is moving at warp speed. My advice is to slow down and watch the motorcade go by. Wave if you aren’t on the phone. Chilmark welcomes the First Family for their annual vacation amongst us.

Chappy is a part of Edgartown. In essence, we belong to Edgartown; we are one of her holdings. But days like this one, the rainy breezy late summer season ones, remind me how far apart we are from our parent company.

Weeds and Vines

I spent some time locating my peanut plants. Because the weeds were so huge and well-established, I cut them at soil level. I feared for the lives of the plants if I attempted to pull the weeds.

Anita Hotchkiss was strolling a beach along the Island’s south shore at Quansoo when she saw a small shiny object in the sand. Upon closer inspection, she realized that she found a unique and uncommon fish.

I had an inkling that migratory movement was afoot when I received a call from Laurie Reese. She reported two yellow warblers and two ovenbirds in her yard.

Edgartown Loft Apartments Win Final Approval

In the unanimous vote Tuesday night, which came over the loud objection of neighbors, the town planning board cited a dire need for rental housing.

“We have a traffic problem but we have a housing crisis,” said board member Robert Sparks.

Episcopal Bishop to Preach at Union Chapel

This Sunday, August 17, the guest preacher at Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs is Bishop Robert Christopher Wright from Atlanta, Ga. He is the first African American to become an Episcopal bishop in Georgia.
