At last month’s dedication of the 9/11 memorial and museum in New York city, President Obama paid special tribute to “the man with the red bandana,” who rescued at least 12 people from the burning and collapsing South Tower of the World Trade Center before being killed himself. Twenty-four-year-old Welles Crowther, the son of Jefferson and Allison Crowther, had spent early childhood summers at the Chilmark seasonal home of his late grandparents, Bosley and Florence Crowther. His grandfather was the longtime movie critic of the New York Times.

Work Begins on Fence to Curb Dog Barking in West Tisbury

The West Tisbury selectmen took steps this week to resolve an ongoing dispute between Animal Health Care Associates and the residents of Coffin’s Field over noise from barking dogs at the veterinary clinic’s kennel near the airport.

Land Bank Revenues: June 20

The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank reported revenues of $106,120 for the business week ending on Friday, June 20, 2014. The land bank receives its funds from a two per cent fee charged on many Vineyard real estate transactions.

Much of the land bank revenue last week came from the town of Tisbury, where three transactions resulted in $56,220. In Oak Bluffs, six eligible transactions yielded $31,680. And one transaction netted $18,220 in Chilmark. No eligible transactions were recorded in Aquinnah, Edgartown or West Tisbury.
