Edgartown Celebrates Plein Air Painting

Last year the North Water Gallery in Edgartown held a plein air event that included several of their artists taking to the streets of Edgartown during a weeklong period and producing works of art to be sold at the end of the week. Art lovers enjoyed the event so much that this year it has been expanded to include the Christina Gallery and Piknik Art and Apparel, both also located in Edgartown.

Faulkner Workshop

The Vineyard Haven Library is hosting a six-week workshop on William Faulkner entitled Discovering Faulkner’s Fiction. Aquinnah summer resident and professor of literature at Swarthmore College, Philip Weinstein will lead the workshop. The first class is on Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. at the library. Subsequent classes will held on Oct. 22, Nov. 5, Nov. 19, Dec. 3 and Dec. 10.

Dance-O-Rama on the Move

Family Dance-O-Rama is moving for the fall season. Formerly held at Flatbread, the family-friendly disco party is heading to Hooked Restaurant, 15 Island Inn Road, Oak Bluffs on Sunday nights from 5 to 7 p.m.

DJ Shizz will still be spinning the tunes that are guaranteed to get everyone from toddler to octogenarian on the floor — although it is the wee ones who really shine and shake it at these events.

Food is still part of the plan, too, with kid and adult-friendly menus available. Admission, as always, is free.

Vineyard Warrior Triathlon

The Vineyard Warrior triathlon touches down on the Vineyard on Sunday, Sept. 8, for the third year in a row. Contestants begin at Inkwell Beach in Oak Bluffs for a one-mile swim, the 28.84 mile bike portion follows, with the 6.2 mile run completing the race. The finish line is back in Oak Bluffs at Waban Park. There is also a relay division and a spring division with a .4 mile swim, 12.7 mile bike and 3.71 mile run.

The starting time for Sunday is at 7:30 a.m., so get up early to cheer on the triathletes.

Polly Hill Plant Sale

The perfect time to plant is upon us and the Polly Hill Arboretum offers its fall plant sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 14. Staff will be available to answer questions about the Vineyard climate and plant selection.

Museum Highlights the Art in Martha

Martha’s Vineyard Museum points out that you can’t spell Martha’s Vineyard without ART as they sponsor the annual fall art extravaganza featuring Vineyard artists such as Tony Holand, Meg Mercier, Kara Taylor, David Wallis, Wendy Weldon, Allen Whiting and more. The art party takes place at a private Edgartown home and offers an opportunity to view some Vineyard treasures and gain insight from the artists as they discuss their work.

Please Adopt Us

The Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard says goodbye with gratitude to all the summer visitors who visited our residents, walked the dogs, cuddled the cats, walked in the pet parade, came to the events and gave a donation. The shelter stays open all year round for the benefit of any and all animals who need care. Donations for that purpose are always welcome.

Call for Nominations

Nominations for the Spirit of the Vineyard Award, sponsored by Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard, are open. The annual award honors those who have served one or more nonprofit organizations on the Island, and whose work has made a difference to individuals and to the community. The criteria for selection includes selflessness, range and depth of service performed, the length of volunteer service, the effect on the individuals served and for the Island community as a whole.

Women Empowered Brunch

Women Empowered will celebrate three local women who make a big impact on the Island at a Women of the Year champagne brunch on Sept. 29 at the Harbor View Hotel. The women are Sarah Kuh with Vineyard Healthcare Access, Noli Taylor, who heads up the Island Grown Initiative and Lee Fierro from Island Theatre Workshop.
