B allerinas dance with their feet, balancing on pointe shoes with their limbs elongated to expose the intricate workings of muscles, or leaping across stage, leaving only a slight noise on the floor. But this week at the Vineyard Arts Project, they were dancing with their hands. Wrists became entangled, thumbs circled other digits, and knuckles discovered unexplored crevices.
5K Chop Challenge
On Sunday, Sept. 12, the Friends of the Vineyard Haven Public Library will host the annual race for the library. The 5k run/walk starts at the library with runners proceeding to the West Chop Lighthouse and back. There will also be a 1/2 mile fun run for kids (13 and under). There will be prizes for winners in all age groups, and a raffle. 5k starts at 10 a.m.; fun run for kids starts at 9:45 a.m.; Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.
David Brodnick Graduates
David Hale Brodnick of Chilmark and Pound Ridge, N.Y., grandson of Betty Kogen and nephew of Michael Kogen of Chilmark, graduated with honors from Cornell University with a double-major in Near Eastern studies and history.
Inkwell Beach in Oak Bluffs was closed to swimming Wednesday after water tests showed unacceptable levels of bacteria. Signs were posted to warn bathers of the bacteria.
David Caron, chairman of the Oak Bluffs board of health, reported that water samples taken Monday had come back with an enterococci count of 159 parts per milliliter; the maximum acceptable is 100.

The Vineyard Haven Library will be closed Friday Sept. 3. It will reopen Saturday at 2 p.m. weather permitting. Other town libraries are also expected to close, per the state of emergency.
As the Oct. 5 deadline for a state grant from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners looms closer, the Edgartown Library Foundation is continuing full-speed ahead in their fund-raising efforts for a library expansion project. On Monday, the foundation will hold its second annual Frankly, We Love Our Library event at the Right Fork Diner of the Katama Airfield.
The John Stobart Gallery will open its new encaustic painting exhibition, The Luminous Landscape, with a reception on Thursday, Sept. 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. at 31 North Summer street in Edgartown. The exhibit will hang until Sept. 30.
As discussion continues about cleanup and a still-incomplete investigation into the July 12 Menemsha fire, the Chilmark selectmen are set to meet with spokesmen for the U.S. Coast Guard on Tuesday evening.

Ten minutes outside of Paris is what Aquinnah archaeologist Duncan Caldwell calls a “phantasmagoric landscape” of gnarled rock outcroppings and crevasses. Within these chasms Mr. Caldwell has discovered ancient inscriptions and a novel interpretation of Paleolithic art.

The Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center’s social action committee is once again collecting nonperishable food for the Island Food Pantry which is scheduled to reopen in mid-October.
