A Call to Young Artists
The theme of this year’s Island Book Cover Art Contest, open to all Vineyard sixth grade students, is Island lighthouses. This will be the 19th annual cover competition sponsored by the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber of Commerce.
Here are the requirements: entries must be drawn with a horizontal layout, on 9-inch by 12-inch wide white paper, using only markers or crayons. Chalk, pencil or pen entries are not eligible.
This has not been exactly the type of winter the sailors of the Edgartown Yacht Club think of in connection with boats and sailing, so to keep the members happy, an art show was held on Friday.
It turns out that there are lots of artists, painters and sketchers who are members, so there were 22 entries. One of the artists was professional and sells her paintings all over the country, and that was Meg Mercier now of Edgartown. Another was semi-professional — Helen Bowring. The rest were just artists who painted for the love of it.
On display at the Steamship Authority’s Vineyard Haven terminal Thursday, Jan. 29 from 4 to 6 p.m. will be a special collection of works by young artists Islandwide. Their subject: Vineyard smiles. The show is meant to be a teaser for National Children’s Dental Health Month, coming up in February. Sponsored by Vineyard Smiles, an oral health initiative of Island Health Inc. and the Vineyard Health Care Access, the purpose of the show is to increase youth awareness of the importance of dental hygiene.
What do you do on the ferry? Vineyard artist John Holladay may know, because what he does on the ferry is observe other passengers, and sketch them. Recently, his sea-born pen portraits had been transported as paintings and mixed media works on exhibit at Louisa Gould Gallery in Vineyard Haven. However, due to a flood in the gallery, the works are now only available for perusal and purchase on Ms. Gould’s Web site, louisagould.com.
The Louisa Gould Photography and Gallery annual holiday party is on Saturday, Dec. 27 from 4 to 6 p.m. A new exhibit, The Portrait Paintings of John Holladay and Louisa Gould, will be on view. Other artists showing new works at this time are: Anne McGhee, Meg Mercier, Rachael Paxton, Ovid Osborn Ward, Marjorie Mason, Ed Cohen, Russell Carson, Debi Gero, Donna Blackburn, Gail Rodney, Robert Jewett, Caryn King, Leslie Smith, Jeanne Campbell, James Murray, Laura Roberts, Steve London, Janet Messineo, Jeffrey P’an, Maya Farber and Gray Park.
Elderly Art Show
Island Elderly Housing held its first artists and craftsmen show last week at the Woodside Village II Community Room in Oak Bluffs. The show featured painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, needlepoint, books and cards and other crafts — all work of residents in Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs.
