For five years, Ellie the Elephant has delighted children and adults at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival’s Cinema Circus. Time took its toll, however, leaving Ellie in need of rehabilitation.
Cinema Circus finishes its summer season in Oak Bluffs this Sunday, August 17, from noon to 6 p.m. at Cottagers' Corner, by Hartford Park.
In preparation for the Cinema Circus event held on Sunday, July 13, at the Chilmark Community Center, an advance screening of the animated films was arranged for a group of Kid Critics. The event is from noon to 6 p.m. and includes a screening, circus fun and filmmaking workshops for kids. All events are free, thanks to a generous donor.
Author Robert Putnam in his book Bowling Alone, published in 2000, examined trends in American society and concluded that the country was growing apart due to lack of community involvement. His thesis pointed to a disengaged populace that was more isolated and therefore less likely to be empathetic. The traditional outlets for bringing a community together were no longer thriving, he said, from bowling leagues to PTA meetings, and as a result the country as a whole was suffering.
