Where Island businesses and Island residents meet in West Tisbury, friction has followed.

On Thursday night a public hearing continued at the Martha’s Vineyard Commission on Big Sky Tents to determine whether their proposed facility in the West Tisbury light-industrial district is an appropriate use of a property that abuts a residential zone and makes use of an ancient way.

Comcast announced this week that it will relocate its Island customer service center from Vineyard Haven to a larger, more centrally located office at the airport business park on Dec. 17.

The new facility at 19 East Line Road will offer customers additional parking and a larger and more comfortable lobby area than Comcast’s current location on State Road in Vineyard Haven. The center will feature the full range of Comcast’s products and also will serve as home base for the company’s on-Island technical staff.

Airport commissioners used a letter prepared by fellow commissioner and county commission chairman John S. Alley as a blueprint to spell out when and where rent would be paid by the county or its agencies, and where the county would use airport property essentially rent-free.

In their Wednesday evening meeting, they also discussed how best to monitor infrastructure development of the park’s buildings.
The commissioners agreed to make seven lots at the business park available for lease over the next four months. Three will be available in October, two in November and two in January.
