Lanny McDowell

Lanny McDowell is having an opening this week that can take place in anyone’s home or office. He has opened a gallery on the Internet showing his fine art avian photographs. Anyone can go there by pressing a few buttons on the computer.

Most Vineyard artists have openings at galleries. They schedule a day in the height of summer to roll out their work, send out a box full of invitations and wait for the crowds to come. A reception usually includes wine and cheese and then after a week or so, the work comes down.

1992

Life Magazine photographer Gordon Parks gave a talk at the Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs on Wednesday night. For the Vineyard it was  a first. The 79-year-old black artist not only in photography but in the fields of prose, poetry, movies and music stood before an audience of 150 people and said that he is creatively stronger than ever.

At every opportunity, the audience applauded. Included in a program of slides were not only photographs that are known around the world but images from his latest efforts, which will be published soon in a book.

1966

All of the photographs in this edition of the Gazette and many of those last week were made into halftone engravings right in the Gazette office on a Fairchild Cadet Scan-A-Graver. The machine was installed last Tuesday by Harrison Morgan and Robert Freeman of the Fairchild Graphic Equipment Corp., and Mr. Morgan stayed on the Island through Wednesday to instruct staff members in its use, and Mr. Freeman was back this week to give further instruction.
