A large private party planned for President Obama’s 60th birthday on the Vineyard this weekend has been canceled amid fierce public backlash and rising Covid cases, as the Delta variant spreads on the Island. The party will be scaled back to family and friends, according to a statement.

The Martha’s Vineyard Airport reported a major jam-up of private jet traffic over the weekend, much of it stemming from President Barack Obama’s 60th birthday bash. Airport manager Geoffrey Freeman said private jets crowded the tarmac at the small airport all weekend, draining fuel supplies.

2015

President Obama and his family had a low-key start to their annual Vineyard summer vacation this week, balancing time at home out of the public eye in Chilmark with trips out for meals with friends. There has also been beach time — and for the President of course, plenty of time on Island golf courses.

Golf, dinner out with his wife, more golf. President Obama’s Vineyard vacation has been low key and mostly below the radar as he and his family begin a two-week-plus visit to the Vineyard. The Obamas arrived Friday night, a day earlier than planned.

President Barack Obama and his family stepped off Marine One at 6:26 p.m. Friday at the Martha’s Vineyard Airport to begin a 16-day summer vacation on the Island.

In a late change of plans, President Obama and his family are scheduled to arrive on Martha’s Vineyard Friday evening for a 16-day vacation, the sixth time the first family has chosen the Island for a summer break.

President Obama will return to Martha’s Vineyard in August for a 15-day vacation, the sixth summer White House trip during his presidency.

2014

President Obama departed the Island just after sunset on Sunday, concluding a 15-day vacation that saw a mix of work and recreation. There were fewer public outings this year during a vacation that was punctuated by strife in international and domestic affairs.
