Boston-based artist, teacher and long-time Vineyard visitor Elizabeth Carter opens an exhibit of her work at the Chilmark Library on South Road from Saturday, June 22. The reception is from 3 to 5 p.m.

Vineyard artist Linda Thompson captured the erosion at Lucy Vincent beach in her oil paintings which will be exhibited at the Chilmark Library beginning June 15. Other offerings include Menemsha scenery and the Allen sheep farm. Ms. Thompson is a Chilmark resident who has studied art at Pratt Institute, Carnegie Mellon University and McGill University.

A reception with the artist is on opening day from 3 to 5 p.m. at the library located at Beetlebung Corner in Chilmark. The exhibition will be open during regular library hours until June 21.

What do oysters and seaweed have in common?

“Both remove nitrogen,” Woods Hole marine scientist Scott Lindell told a large group that attended his recent talk at the Chilmark Library about a two-year exploratory effort to cultivate seaweed in Waquoit Bay. The $150,000 project will continue through this summer and is funded through the Woods Hole Sea Grant program.

On the Vineyard where art galleries abound and artists abound even more, there is, it seems, art everywhere. But it’s not just traditional galleries that showcase art. Venturing off the tracks, one can encounter not only art that enchants but artists who do so as well.

This month the work of Chris Hughes is being highlighted at Mocha Mott’s in Vineyard Haven and the work of Edie Yoder at the Chilmark Library.

2010

Certified qigong instructor Nan Doty will offer a four-week workshop based on the book The Healer Within: The Four Essential Self-Care Methods for Creating Optimal Health, by Roger Jahnke. Running on Wednesdays throughout January, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Chilmark Library, the workshop promises the opportunity to begin the new year with vitality.

2008

Is your cream sauce lumpy? Does your hollandaise curdle? Head for the Chilmark Public Library’s free winter cooking classes, Mastering the Art of French Sauces.

Featuring Le Grenier’s Jean-Marc Dupon, the series will begin Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. at the library.

Each class will include a demonstration, tasting and recipes for a different, classic French sauce. Mr. Dupon will demonstrate how to perfect the basic sauce, and how to adapt it with herbs, spices and other magic.
