A hearing at the Massachusetts state house on a bill that would allow the town of Oak Bluffs to ban moped rentals has been postponed. The hearing was scheduled for Tuesday morning.

Despite a legislative initiative to ban the rental of mopeds it appears Oak Bluffs is driving, with hardly a wobble, toward another summer with mopeds on Island roadways.

The latest effort to curb rental mopeds in the town of Oak Bluffs has seen a setback after a home rule petition died on Beacon Hill in December. The bill was refiled at the start of the 2019 legislative session.

Island police responded to incidents over the weekend that included a moped accident with injuries, a rental scam and public nudity.

Good news: the long-sought home rule petition to prohibit rental mopeds has been filed by our state representative.

Oak Bluffs selectmen voted Tuesday to renew the operating licenses of three moped rental companies.
