A hearing at the Massachusetts state house for a bill that would allow the town of Oak Bluffs to ban moped rentals has been postponed.
The hearing before the Joint Committee on Municipalities and Regional Governments was scheduled for Tuesday morning this week, the same day as four annual town meetings on Martha’s Vineyard.
Kaylea Moore, legislative liaison for Martha’s Vineyard, said in an email Monday that the hearing was scheduled for April 9 to allow the legislation to move forward quickly, but was postponed at the request of the town of Chilmark.
“Chilmark sent a request . . . to postpone it to allow more people to attend,” Ms. Moore said.
“Unfortunately, this outcome slows down the progress of the bill,” she also wrote.
She said the bill, filed jointly by state Rep. Dylan Fernandes and Sen. Julian Cyr, will be scheduled for a hearing later in the legislative session.
The legislation is a home rule petition that was submitted to state lawmakers by Oak Bluffs following a vote to seek the legislative change at the annual town meeting last year.
A similar bill filed last year died in committee.
