Ferry service on the Seastreak has been suspended through Sept. 3, the company announced this week.
With the rising cost of housing on Martha’s Vineyard pushing people to move off-Island and a growing need for more Island workers, Seastreak is now proposing daily round trips to the Vineyard geared towards commuters.
The Steamship Authority is proposing to raise its rates for the second year in a row to offset a projected $3 million budget shortfall, but most Island residents and walk-on commuters would be spared from the increases.
Changes in office habits have pushed Seastreak to stop running its summer ferry route from New York City to Martha’s Vineyard.
