In a ceremony at the Coast Guard boathouse in Menemsha Friday morning, senior chief Justin Logval moved up to master chief petty officer — the highest rank for an enlisted member in the U.S. Coast Guard.

This time on purpose, United States Coast Guard officers came to Martha’s Vineyard Wednesday night, to say a fervent thank-you to an Island harbormaster.
He is John M. Edwards of Edgartown, and he earned the citation presented to him at a ceremony in the board room of the Co-operative Bank by delivering a Coast Guard helicopter to safety from a forced landing at night on the rip-swept open sea off the Katama beach.

The Island’s new Coast Guard station, en route from Cuttyhunk, came through Quick’s Hole, from Buzzards Bay at 1 o’clock yesterday, and proceeded across the Sound without mishap.

Additional restrictions on the operation of pleasure craft in waters around Martha's Vineyard have been ordered by the Coast Guard as of last Friday. The regulations are issued by the Captain of the Port at Newport and are unique in the fact that they have been made public in any written or printed form. The substance of the restrictions has been ascertained from the Coast Guard, however, and charts with the restricted areas marked, are accessible at both Vineyard Haven and Edgartown.
A Tuesday in February in Menemsha starts like most of the Island — serene. But more so.
